Together We Worship, Grow, Serve, and Share

Day One

I believe that most spiritual journeys are poorly planned and poorly conceived.  They always start in the wrong place.  Most spiritual journeys begin with you, with who you are.  You are informed that you are a sinner, that you are eternally separated from God, and that without the offered solution, you will inherit certain destruction.  I would like to direct you differently. I would like for you to start your journey not with who you are, but with who God is.

How then do you begin to understand who God is?  I feel one way is to ask God, "What is your name?"  In fact, it is only natural to ask of one's name before you get to know that person.  The relationship always begins with learning the name.

In many cultures, a name is an indicator of a person's character.  Therefore, if we can learn the name of God, then we can learn of His character. So let's ask God his name.

God has many names.  However, for our journey, two names will be examined.  These are Elohim and Yahweh.  Take time to get to know God by studying these two names.

Elohim: The plural form of EL, meaning “strong one.” It is used of false gods, but is also used of the true God.  It is a plural, so it speaks of the Trinity. It is especially used of God’s sovereignty, creative work, mighty work for Israel, and in relation to His sovereignty (Isaiah 54:5; Jeremiah 32:27; Genesis 1:1; Isaiah 45:18; Deuteronomy 5:23; Deuteronomy 8:15; Psalm 68:7).

 There are compounds of El:

El Shaddai:“God Almighty.” This name teaches God’s loving supply and comfort.  It also stresses His power as the Almighty, as one standing on a mountain, who corrects and chastens (Genesis 17:1; Genesis 28:3; Genesis 35:11; Exodus 6:31; Psalm 91:1, 2).
El Elyon: “The Most High God.” Speaks of God’s strength, sovereignty, and supremacy (Genesis 14:19; Psalm 9:2; Daniel 7:18, 22, 25).
El Olam: “The Everlasting God.” Emphasizes God’s unchangeableness and is connected with the fact that He is never-ending. (Genesis 16:13).

Yahweh (YHWH): Comes from a verb which means “to exist, to be.” In short it means that He is the self-existent God.  Also it stresses His work of redemption (Genesis 4:3; Exodus 6:3; Exodus 3:12).

There are compounds of Yahweh. They reveal additional facts about God’s character.

Yahweh Jireh (Yireh): “The Lord will provide.” God’s provides for His people (Genesis 22:14).
Yahweh Nissi:“The Lord is my Banner.” God is our rallying point and our means of victory; the one who fights for His people (Exodus 17:15).
Yahweh Shalom:“The Lord is Peace.” God is the means of our peace and rest (Judges 6:24).
Yahweh Sabbaoth:“The Lord of Hosts.” God is the commander of the armies of heaven (1 Samuel 1:3; 1 Samuel 17:45).
Yahweh Maccaddeshcem: “The Lord your Sanctifier.” God is the means of our  sanctification or as the one who sets believers apart for His purposes (Exodus 31:13).
Yahweh Ro’i: “The Lord my Shepherd.” God is the Shepherd who cares for His people as a shepherd cares for his sheep (Psalm 23:1).
Yahweh Tsidkenu: “The Lord our Righteousness.” God is the means of our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6).
Yahweh Shammah: “The Lord is there.” Speaks to the promise that God is personally present in the millennial kingdom (Ezekiel 48:35).
Yahweh Elohim Israel: “The Lord, the God of Israel.” God is the God of Israel in contrast to the false gods of the nations (Judges 5:3; Isaiah 17:6).

There are other names of God that we will explore at another date.
