A Short Study on Lucifer

I want to be brief with this lesson. I want to do it quickly. Why the rush? Because today we will study Lucifer and I have no desire to give Lucifer any significant time.

Here is today’s takeaway. Lucifer wants to fill you full of lies and he wants to steal God’s glory.

Ezekiel 28:12-15

Open your Bible to Ezekiel 28 and find your way to verse 11.

Here we find a lament for the king of Tyre. But it is understood by most Bible scholars that this lament is for Lucifer, the fallen Cherub.

“You were the seal of perfection,
Full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13 You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond,
Beryl, onyx, and jasper,
Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.
The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes
Was prepared for you on the day you were created.

14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers;
I established you;
You were on the holy mountain of God;
You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.
15 You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till iniquity was found in you.”

 Facts About Lucifer

  • God created Lucifer with perfect wisdom and beauty.
  • Lucifer moved between the throne room of God and the Garden of Eden.
  • He was a covering Cherub, meaning he protected God’s holiness.
  • Lucifer was created holy.

But Lucifer gave all of that up. Lucifer turned away from God and rebelled. Look again at Ezekiel 28:15

“You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created,
Till iniquity was found in you.”

Isaiah 14:12-14

Now turn to Isaiah 14:12

“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
13 For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’”

This passage describes the fall of Lucifer.

In verse 13 we see that Lucifer desired to be above God and that he desired to be worshipped as God.

But in verse 14 we see that Lucifer wanted even more than that. Lucifer wanted to be God. Look again at verse 14, here are the words of Lucifer,

“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.”

Imagine that. A created being, an angel, desired to be God. But that is exactly what Lucifer desired. And God cast him out to earth.

Application

What can we apply from a study of Lucifer?

Let’s use John 8 to help us apply what we have learned. Read John 8:44. In John 8, Jesus is debating the Jewish leadership. It is a heated debate. Read Jesus’ words.

“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.”

So here is your application. When you reject the truth of the gospel, when we reject the salvation Jesus is offering, then you are a child of Satan. God is not your father and you are condemned forever.

But when you trust on Jesus Christ, when you accept the truth of the gospel, then God is your Father and you are saved forever.

So which are you? In whom do you trust? It is my hope and prayer that you have put your trust on Jesus Christ. You are a sinner – Jesus died for those sins. You are far from God because of your sin – but if you believe on Jesus you will be a child of God.

Now if you have never done this. If you have never believed on Jesus, then do it now. Believe today.

  • Tell God about your sins.
  • Believe that Jesus died for these sins.
  • And, ask Him to save you.
