Together We Worship, Grow, Serve, and Share

Day Two

Now that we have learned the names of God, and from that gained some understanding of His character, it is important that we journey deeper into who God is.  The best way to do that is to study some of His attributes, His character traits.  I will share just a few on this journey and introduce some others later.

The first thing I would like to share about God is that He is spirit.  John 4:24 confirms this fact.  That means that God is not limited by a physical body.  Sometimes the Bible gives physical features for God, (Genesis 3:8; Psalm 34:15). However, these are figures of speech and in no way imply that God has an actual body.

Another thing to know about God is that He is self-existent.  We exist because God wills it.  But this is not so with God.  He has life within Himself, and is existent within Himself.  See Exodus 3:14 and Acts 17:28.

In my human relationships I want to have trust.  I want to be sure that those I befriend will not turn on me, that their promises will remain certain and true.  Often this does not pan out in human relationships.  However with God we can be certain, because God is both perfection and truth.  When we think of God as perfection we understand that He cannot improve nor deteriorate.  Also we can know that His love towards us, and even His promises to us, will never change.  Read Malachi 3:6 and Hebrews 13:8.  The fact that God is truth teaches that He is distinct from all others and that His Word is truth.  Take the time to read Isaiah 44:8-10 and Isaiah 45:5.  Also Titus 1:2 will shed some light on this attribute.

Finally for this journey I would like to share that God is love.  1 John 4:8 speaks to this. That alone is wonderful! However, this attribute of love was demonstrated in an act, the act of sending His Son to die on the cross for the our sin.  Look at 1 John 4:10 and consider the love of God.
